Android Based Smart Box launched by AKAI for India at Rs 6,590

New Delhi: Japanese consumer electronics firm Akai launched a 'Smart Box', which allows users to surf Internet on their television sets, at a price of Rs 6,590 in the country.

The company, which is targeting revenues of Rs 250 crore this fiscal, expects sales of one lakh devices in the next 3-4 months.

"Our Smart box is set to change the way people watch television in India. TVs, irrespective of whether it's a colour TV or LCDs and LEDs, are compatible with the device and using Smart Box can be converted into a smart television," Akai Managing Director Pranay Dhabhai told PTI.

The Android-based device, powered by a 1.25-Ghz processor, comes with a wireless mouse for navigation. It is equipped with 4GB internal memory, expandable upto 32GB through SD card slot

Aakash 2 to be launched very soon: Sibal

Hyderabad: An upgraded version of Aakash, the low cost tablet billed as the cheapest computer in the world for students and the teaching community, is set to be launched "very soon", HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said on Sunday.

The improved version is fitted with a faster processor and enhanced battery life among other features. "It (the idea of low cost computer) was rejected throughout the world and it was said that India would not be able to make it.

Our HRD ministry was committed to the Aakash project and ultimately we came out with the first version of the Aakash which costs Rs 2,276.

"Now, Aakash 2 has been rolled out with battery life of three hours, 800MHz processor, providing internet access everywhere and it has a capacitive screen. The process to distribute this device has begun and it would be formally launched very soon," Sibal said.

Intex launches ICS powered i-Buddy tablet for Rs. 6,490

Betting big on the growing tablet market, IT hardware and electronics products company Intex Technologies has set a target of generating Rs. 1,000 crore turnover in 2012-13.

Last year, the company's turnover was Rs. 779 crore. It had set an "ambitious target of becoming a Rs. 1,000 crore company in FY 2012-13," Intex General Manager (Mobile Business) Sanjay Kumar.

The firm aims to sell 60,000 tablets this year, he said while announcing the regional launch of the Intex i-Buddy tablet running on Android operating system.
