Pen Drives main threat to Cyber Security: Army

New Delhi, Sep 30: Despite a ban, use of pen drives has emerged as the main threat to cyber security in defence forces as it is responsible for over 70 per cent of such breaches in the three Services.

The use of pen drives as an easy-to-carry storage device has increased in the recent past and internal reports have confirmed that over 70 per cent cyber security breaches in the armed forces are due to their unauthorised use, Army officials told PTI here.

"These pen drives, which are mostly manufactured in China, have emerged as a big threat to our cyber security systems," they said.

Fresh cyber security guidelines have been issued by the Army headquarters to protect sensitive military networks from hacker attacks, sources said.

Measures have been taken by the other two services also to tighten their cyber security as IAF also recently issued instructions to its personnel warning them against having any official data on their personal computers and pen drives.

‘Facebook murder’: Girl killed over Facebook posts

THE HAGUE: A Dutch court on Monday jailed a teenage boy for stabbing a 15-year-old girl to death and trying to kill her father after she had allegedly posted derogatory comments about another girl on Facebook.

The boy, identified as 15-year-old Jing Hua K, was jailed for a year and ordered to spend at least two years in a psychiatric facility for the January 14 murder in the eastern city of Arnhem.

The sentence is the maximum in the Netherlands for a minor.

"The court is of the opinion the defendant deliberately killed" the girl, Joyce Hau, known as Winsie to her friends, as well as attempted to murder her father, judges said in a verdict which was posted online.

Prosecutors told the court the murder happened after Hau had had a fight on the social networking site Facebook with a 16-year-old friend, who was identified as Polly W.

Prosecutors said Polly's boyfriend, 17-year-old Wesley C then allegedly phoned and spoke to Jing Hua K via Facebook to arrange the killing, and also allegedly discussed the possibility of killing Hau's entire family.

Facebook Helping Police to Check Crime

HUBLI: A social networking site is helping Haveri police track down criminals and streamline traffic.

Police had a tough time getting public support to control crime but are now getting it through their Facebook account. The site is also helping police discipline some errant police personnel and keeping a tab on them.

Superintendent of police Chetansingh Rathod mooted the plan to use the site and opened an account in the name of 'SP Haveri' ten months ago. The efforts to get information and assistance from members of the public have paid off.

The account has 3,500 followers and most help the SP improve the law and order situation in Haveri by posting their complaints, grievances and giving tips about crimes in their areas. Based on these, police are taking action and improving the system. Rathod told STOI, "We targeted educated youths and students and received a good response. With the help of tips and complaints posted online, we disciplined errant constables who were harassing people, particularly motorists, to cough up bribes and those who were not handling traffic at crowded places efficiently. Many are giving tips about errant police personnel, traffic problems in city and other crimes."

He said "We cracked a racket which involved duping people, gambling, and other cases after getting tip-offs. When we got an alert about traffic snarls, we fixed them." Police also cracked a money-doubling racket in Guttal village after an alert on the site. Source-TOI

Police to start investigation into Pinki Pramanik MMS case

KOLKATA: The cyber crime section of Kolkata Police will probe athlete Pinki Pramanik MMS case. As a part of the investigation, a police team is expected to visit Pinki on Saturday.

Soon after Pinki's arrest on June 14, an MMS clip of the athlete in nude went viral on the net. It was also circulated on the mobile phones. Following this two advocates had filed a public interest litigation at Calcutta High Court to investigate into the crime.

Pinki was arrested after a woman companion alleged that the former Asian Games gold medallist was a man and slapped rape charges on her. She was released her on July 10 after spending 25 days in prison. Railways had suspended the middle distance runner from her ticket checker's job after the arrest.

A team from Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) visited the athlete at her Teghoria home on Thursday. APDR is one of the organisations that first came to the aid of Pinki, raising the issue of violation of her human rights and approached the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) on it.

"Pinki is still traumatised. The WBHRC has called Pinki to its office on August 7 to hear the athlete's plight. This shows the commission's seriousness on issues of human rights violation. We welcome the move. We also demand immediate revocation of Pinki's suspension from the railway job," said Ranjit Sur of APDR.
