Odisha minor girl committed suicide over obscene pics on Facebook

A minor girl in Odisha's Cuttack district committed suicide after her obscene pictures were circulated on a social networking site, police said on Friday.

A man in the 15-year-old girl's village had secretly clicked some photographs of the girl while she was taking a bath in the backyard of her house and blackmailed her into having a physical relationship him.

Later, he took pictures of their intimate moments which he then circulated among his friends and posted on Facebook as well.

When the girl's father came to know about it, he brought the matter before the village committee. The committee asked the 18-year-old man to marry the girl, but he refused.

Unable to face humiliation and social stigma, the girl committed suicide by consuming poison.

"We have registered a case of unnatural death on the basis of a complaint by the girl's father. We are searching for the youth who is absconding," said Nemala police station officer Jayashree Ojha.

The girl had recently appeared for her Class 10 examination while the man is a second year student at a local college.

Delhi Police banned Uber cab in Delhi after rape incident

NEW DELHI: Delhi government on Monday banned all operations by private cab service Uber with immediate effect and blacklisted it from providing any transport service in the national capital in the wake of the alleged rape incident in a taxi plying for it.

The action came a day after a taxi driver employed by Uber was arrested from Mathura for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman executive in his cab.

"The transport department has banned all activities related to providing of any transport service by www.uber.com with immediate effect. The department has also blacklisted the company from providing any transport service in the NCT of Delhi in future," the Delhi government said in a statement.

It said the transport department has cancelled the permit and registration certificate of the taxi (DL1YD 7910) and driving licence of the accused.

According to the department, the taxi permit was granted on May 28, 2014, after due verification of character and antecedents of the permit holder.

Government said that Uber, the US-based cab firm, misled the commuter (rape victim) about the nature of the taxi service offered by its App.

Facebook offers Rs 2 crore package to IIT-Bombay girl

 

JAIPUR: IIT-Bombay student Aastha Agarwal's Facebook job offer with Rs two crore package is perhaps the highest offered to an undergrad. The 20-year-old Jaipur girl is a third-year computer science student.

Her family has been celebrating ever since she broke the news. "Since I did training with Facebook in May-June in California, they were aware of my work and selected me during pre-placement," said Aastha.

"I was supposed to develop software. They were satisfied with my work and offered me the job right away. Later, when I consented, they sent me the confirmation letter.''

She said she was eagerly waiting to complete her fourth year to join Facebook by October next year.

Aastha was earlier selected to represent India at the Junior Science International Olympiad in 2009.

India has the third-largest Internet user base in the world:Report

The number of Internet users in India is expected to cross the 300 million mark by the end of this year, overtaking the US as world’s second-largest Internet market.

According to a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, the number of Internet users in India is expected to grow 32 per cent to 302 million this year from 213 million at the end of December 2013.

Presently, India has the third-largest Internet user base in the world. While China leads with more than 600 million Internet users, the US has an estimated 279 million users. It is estimated, the report said, that by December 2014, India will overtake the US as the second largest Internet users’ base in the world.

The user base in India is further estimated to grow to 354 million by June 2015.

Fake shopping portal busted by police

 

                                                                                                                                                   BENGALURU: A fake shopping portal, raided by police for allegedly duping gullible customers with false advertisements, will be shut down soon, a senior police official said.

"We will order shutting down the fake web site after completing the investigation and filing charge-sheet against the six accused partners who created the portal (BIGSOP.com) and used payment gateways of many banks for transactions," Bengaluru joint commissioner of Police Hemant Nimbalkar told IANS here.

The six accused were arrested Saturday and jailed Sunday after a court remanded them to six-day judicial custody pending investigation.

"We busted the fake portal by taking suo motu action on a complaint one of its victims posted on our Twitter account, alleging he was duped by the web site, by first declaring him a lucky winner of an iPhone for Rs 599 but not delivering the handset despite remitting the amount through a bank's payment gateway," Nimbalkar said.
